From the Board President – January 2014

In the past few months, much time and energy from the congregation has gone into planning our budget for the upcoming year. This culminated in the congregational meeting on December 15th, where we considered a $280,757 budget proposal. Because we have our stewardship drive near the end of the year, there is always a difficulty in accurately projecting pledge revenues. This year, our 2014 pledges fell significantly short of what was anticipated in the proposed budget. Because this shortfall would leave us with the potential for a $22,000 budget deficit, the congregation voted to defer approval of the budget until January 26th.

In the interim, the Board, Stewardship, and Finance committees will be working with the congregation to identify ways to reduce this deficit.

The primary focus of this effort will be to identify additional sources of revenue that can help ease our dependence on pledge income. A roundtable discussion on these efforts is tentatively scheduled for January 12th. Stay tuned for additional details.

Of course, the simplest way to help reduce the deficit is by making a pledge. If you have not yet made a 2014 pledge, now would be a great time to do so. If you have already pledged, but feel able to help out a bit more, any additional contribution would be most welcome. You can make your pledge or additional gift in any of the following ways.

  • Email Mark VanMeeter at or Laura Geiger at
  • Stop by the church office and fill out a pledge card
  • Write a check to UUC with “2014 pledge” (for new pledges) or “2014 special gift” (for additional gifts) in the notes section

Together, we can work through these budgeting issues and move on to what promises to be a wonderful year ahead at the UUC.

Best Wishes,
Mark VanMeeter
Board President
